LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A perfect world for a child would be a loving mom and a loving dad living with them in the same house.

Stands to reason that in the imperfect world we live in, shared parenting in cases of divorce and separation would be beneficial. That’s the conclusion of reviews of decades of child development research.

Shared parenting is joint legal custody and shared physical custody.

But a new national study by the National Parents Organization says in over 80 percent of child custody cases, family courts award sole custody, and states are discouraging shared parenting with their laws.

The group grades Kentucky a D- in this regard and Indiana a C-.

We encourage state legislatures and family courts to re-examine the impact they are having on our children. Providing children with as much time as possible with both parents seems more beneficial overall for situations that are admittedly not ideal.
